Tests are considered very important in every sphere of life when it is necessary to decide anything about anyone. Though it is time to get admission in a school college or university or when there is a need to diagnose a disease.  Here we will discuss about the standardized testing and especially the dark side of these tests for students. These tests have been held for a long time to observe and detect qualities or flaws of a person (students). The process of these tests is to sit down, fill in bubbles on a sheet hoping that this process will tell us about our characteristics accurately. But we never thought that whether is it possible to decide about on the basis of this type of tests. This article is dedicated to bring out the dark side of standardized tests.

 

   

 

What is Standardized Testing?

First, let us understand fully that what the standardized testing is, why are they performed. These are tests given to students in many schools to measure how much they've learned. Everyone takes the same test, and it is graded the same way. These tests can decide a lot of things about the students, like whether they move to the next grade or even how much money the school gets.

 

The Pressure to Perform:

A big problem of these standardized testing is that the pressure which it puts on the students. Imagine you are sitting in the class, and your teacher says that this test will decide your future. That's a lot of pressure for anyone, especially kids. We start to worry about getting everything right and feel stressed out. This can make us nervous and sometimes even sick.

 

Learning vs. Memorizing:

As the understanding is essential rather than to memorizing only but these tests focus on the latter one. When we start studying for these tests, we spend a lot of time trying to remember dates, formulas and vocabulary words. But real learning is about understanding ideas and being able to use them in different situations in practical life. By focusing so much on memorizing or cramming we might miss out on truly understanding the subjects we are studying.

   

Not Everyone is the Same:

 Individual differences are very important to know about as a teacher because without knowing about individual differences a satisfactory out come is almost impossible. Think about your classmates. Some are great at math, others are fantastic at reading and some can draw amazing pictures. We all are  different from one another and have our own strengths and weaknesses. Standardized tests don't always recognize these differences. They measure everyone by the same yardstick, which isn't fair. Some students might not do well on a test, even if they are really smart and talented in other ways.

 

The Impact on Teaching:

   

Standardized testing also affects our teachers in teaching with a consideration of helping their students doing something with the help of their own observations and experiments. They feel pressured to make sure that the students do well on these tests. This means the teachers might spend a lot of time teaching the students how to take the test instead of helping them to explore and enjoy learning. They might miss out on fun projects, creative activities and deep discussions because the focus is on preparing for the test.

 

 What Can We Do?

The question what can we do about it? There are key points that we should keep in mind.

First, we can talk to our parents and teachers about how we feel. They might be able to help us manage our stress and find ways to make learning more enjoyable. Second, we can try to learn for the sake of learning, not just for a test. This means asking questions, exploring new ideas and finding things we are passionate about. Finally, we can be kind to ourselves and remember that a test score doesn't define who we are and what can we do as grown-up.

 

In conclusion, while standardized tests are meant to measure our knowledge, they often come with a heavy price. They can cause stress, focus too much on memorization, ignore our unique strengths, and change how our teachers teach. By being aware of these issues, we can start to find better ways to learn and grow. After all, education should be about discovering the world and ourselves, not just about filling in the right bubbles.
