5 E's of Lesson Planning:
Learning Theory of Construction:
According to which learning is an active process and people
acquire knowledge and understanding through the combination of ideas and
experiences. In this knowledge and concepts are conceptualized based on prior
knowledge.
Teachers design
instruction and lessons based on objectives, gathers resources, and provides
opportunities for students to explore, learn, and practice. Thus, the learning
environment becomes student-centered instead of teacher-centered. The 5 E's
model of the lesson plan pretty much follows this theory.
Following are the 5
Es of the lesson plan.
Note: In this model lesson plan, the first letter of all
five elements is taken as "E". Hence it is called the 5ES model.
1-
Engage:
Students review all of the material, then set their own
questions for classroom work addresses fundamental issues, relates prior
learning and information to new lessons, as well as identify examples similar
to routine life.
2-
Explore:
Students are directly involved in reflecting on the content
as they go through the learning process and solve problems, while working as a
team share the knowledge and information gained with other students.
3-
Explain:
Students are given the opportunity to illustrate taught
concepts such as discoveries, procedures, and theories through written or oral
assignments or creative writing projects. The teacher's job is to provide
materials, books, resources, etc., give feedback, improve vocabulary, and clear
up confusion and remove the mistakes.
4-
Elaborate:
The teacher can expand students' knowledge with the help of
more examples, and also explain similar concepts. While students may be asked
to apply the knowledge in another situation. New concepts raise more questions
that open doors to new research.
5-
Evaluate:
Assessment of learning is an ongoing process. Both teachers
and students test understanding of concepts through various assessment
techniques such as rubrics printed on different coloured test papers,
checklists, teacher interviews, portfolios, problems, etc. out comes from the
solutions of problems and assessed results can be used. The performance of the
students can be evaluated from these results and changes in teaching can be
made according to future needs.
