ROLE OF EDUCATION IN PROMOTION AND PRESERVATION OF CULTURE:
Education is essential for every individual and every
society. It is not preparation for living, but "life" itself. That
is, education is life. There are countless qualities in a human being. These
individual qualities and strengths need to be nurtured to work in collective
development. And this is what education does. Thus education plays a
commendable role in individual, social and nation building. Education is what
makes a person capable to recognize individual responsibilities and achieve
higher goals.
The educational process is also called an effort by which
such changes are brought about in an individual, such qualities are developed
that he/she can adopt such behavior as an individual that he can recognize the
society.
Education, from the point of view of well-being, transmits
social culture to the next generations.
(a):- According to E. B. Taylor:
Culture is a complex whole that includes knowledge, beliefs,
arts, ethics, law and customs. Rather, it also includes the individual habits
of people and the social skills that the individual learned in that society.
This culture continues to be transmitted to the next generation in the same
way.
In this sense education is a process by which culture is
transmitted.
(b):- According to J. S. Mill:
Education is a culture that society consciously imparts to
those individuals who will follow it in the future. At least maintain this
culture and if possible improve upon it and today's best standards will be
preserved.
According to this definition, two points are worth
mentioning:
(1):- Preservation of culture is possible only through
education. The goal of every generation is the preservation of culture. For
example, the preservation of our culture is in the hands of our young
generation. If they (our youth) ignore it today i.e. ignore the greatness of
their own culture and start imitating other cultures, it can be harmful for the
current development of the country.
(2):- No culture can be said
perfect. It needs to be refined all the time. Although the culture of
Pakistan is a rich culture of the Roary traditions of the past. It is also an
excellent example of ancient requirements. But in spite of this, with the
passage of time many undesirable things were added like caste system, social
upliftment and early marriages etc. Likewise, the use of new technology to
increase productivity so as to increase industrial and agricultural production.
These and such refinements and changes can only come through education. Just as
an individual wants that his offspring should not suffer from problems,
similarly a society wants that the new generation of the world society should
be protected from problems. Therefore, the society, like the individual, must
ensure social and cultural stability through education.
To understand the role of education for the individual,
society and the country, we examine the relationship and process of this
(education) with respect to the three (individual, society and country).
Functions of Education Toward Individuals:
(i):-Education develops the innate qualities of a child. And it provides opportunities for growth.
(ii):- Different branches of education improve the attitudes
of individuals. Better attitudes are developed through learning.
(iii):-Education is all-round development. That is, the
physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual development of the child.
(iv):-Education prepares the individual in all aspects for
the future. Because of education they
have better productivity.
And better sources of
income can be adopted. However, it should be the child's own will with regard
to educationists or trends.
(v):-Education builds character. Education develops a
person's physical, mental, moral, social, aesthetic and spiritual personality
and on the basis of this he creates his identity and position in the society.
(Vi):- Education helps to develop conformity in individuals.
Humans have very different abilities compared to other animals. One of which is
the ability to think. Man has to adapt to the environment. This is done through
adaptive learning.
(2):- DUTIES OF EDUCATION FOR SOCIETY:
(i):- Social Change and Control:
Society never remains in a static state. Rather, society is
always dynamic and changing. A child learns everything from the society in
which he opens his eyes. It is as if the social environment trains him. And in
this his personality is built. Old concepts, customs and traditions are
transferred from one generation to another, but they are not static. They are
constantly changing and evolving into new molds. Therefore, it is important
that beliefs are not followed blindly as this creates a barrier to growth and
development. Education in this regard helps people to get benefits from the
advancement of science and technology
(ii):-Reconstruction
of Experiences:
Life is education and education is life. Learning is a
lifelong process and is filled with experiences. Man cannot simply live on old
experiences because they are not compatible with the changing environment.
Education helps the individual to reconstruct experiences as an individual to
adapt the environment.
(iii):-
Development of social and moral values:
Society is always troubled by narrow-mindedness, but a
society which does not have social and moral values lives like beasts and
animals. Animalism can be changed only through education. Education teaches
moral values. Social values include mutual cooperation, tolerance, sympathy
and benevolence, feelings of mutual love and respect, of elders. Aid to the poor
and needy. All this is due to education.
(iv):-Providing Opportunity or Equality:
Islam is the source of equality. Islamic education system
leads towards equality. But in practice, there are few patterns of equality in
society. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the education system to provide
equal opportunities to every member of the society without discrimination of colour,
caste, religion and gender.
(3):-
FUNCTION OF EDUCATION TOWARDS NATION:
(i):-Inculcation of social and societal responsibilities is
the responsibility of education. Education can train these responsibilities.
Through education, the new generation is made aware of their individual rights
and duties and helps them to become good citizens of their country subject to
democratic values.
(ii):-Training of Leadership:
An individual's leadership or ability to lead is shaped by
education. An individual is trained in all these spheres by involvement in
various spheres of life, social, political, religious and educational activities.
(iii):-National
Integration:
We live in a diverse culture and society. Here, there are
different patterns of colour, race, language, food, clothing and physical
environment. Emotional connection and one-dimensionality are born from academic
coherence and one-dimensionality. Education leads people towards unity instead
of regionalism and democracy instead of dictatorship and increases mutual
relations and respect. Education is the most important function of making a
human being civilized.
(iv):-Total National Development:
Education initiates the building and development of the entire nation by developing all social, economic, cultural, spiritual, moral and educational aspects. At all times and at all levels, education is the best factor in building an individual, society and nation. And there is an antidote in education to eradicate all social evils.
