INTRODUCTION:
The importance of guidance is well understood from the fact that it has been needed by every person in every era. The Creator of the universe sent the Prophets to guide man.
In every era people have been taking guidance from their
elders and more experienced people. With age, needs increase and their nature
also changes. When the child steps out of the house, he comes into contact with
the small adults of the street. When he reaches school, he finds a difference
between the environment of home and school and he feels this difference
strongly. Needs that used to be easily met at home, seem to be difficult to do
at school.
The student had the familiar faces of parents and
siblings, but here in school he comes in contact strangers. In these
circumstances, if he gets guidance from the teachers in the school, then many
of his difficulties and problems are solved and the environment of the school
does not remain strange for him.
There is uniformity in the objectives of education and
guidance. Both aim to promote the student's relevance to society. In today's
era, the invasion of media has increased the problems and difficulties of the
student and the importance and necessity of guidance has increased even more.
A number of new and vocational subjects have been
included in the curriculum at the secondary and higher secondary levels.
Students have to choose subjects according to their inclinations, abilities and interests. Parents choose
subjects for their children keeping in view their own inclinations, likes and
lucrative careers. In such a situation, the importance of counseling and
guidance increases even more.
In civilized countries, it has been observed that
counselors spend most of their counseling time on education and
professional Counseling and guidance in
education becomes necessary so that if children choose subjects according to
their abilities and inclinations, they can achieve more in academic and
practical fields in less time. Timely and proper guidance makes the education
process effective and brings out the latent potential of the child. Children's
individual differences directly affect their performance in curricular
acquisition and co-curricular activities.
If they do not have guidance and counseling from parents
and teachers, they feel out of sync with home, school and society. It is not
necessary that children who are weak in studies are not good sportsmen and
speakers. The counselor's job is to explore the child's God-given abilities and
enable him to make the most of them. School shapes the emotional, social and
psychological attitudes of children and plays an important role in developing a
balanced personality. Parents and teachers are unable to perform the duty of
guidance and counseling along with education. Therefore, it is important that
the school provides guidance and counseling facilities to transfer cultural
heritage and cultural power to future generations. Guidance and counseling in
schools is important to make the guidance available to students at home more
effective.
Guidance and counseling is important in schools because,
1: Guidance available at home could be make better for
students.
2: Students can adapt better understanding at home,
school and in society.
3: Students can be attracted towards education and can
play the role of a useful citizen.
4: Students can use time outside of school in a positive
and constructive way.
5: All aspects and
full development of children can be done.
6: Students can choose subjects at a better and
appropriate time in their academic life.
7: Students can choose suitable professions in practical
life.
8: The problems and difficulties of less privileged
students can be eradicated and they can be prepared in such a way that they can
adapt the environment.
9: The qualities
of discipline should be developed in the students so that they can serve the
nation in a constructive manner.
10: Students can be aware of the problems and
difficulties of professional life.
Counseling and guidance is not only done for people with problems but the normal people are also studied , so that they can live a more effective and successful life by being aware of their strengths, weaknesses, tendencies and interests etc. In the light of the results obtained from the consultation, measures can be suggested which can be followed to make the social life more pleasant and many social problems can be prevented.

"In conclusion, it is impossible to exaggerate the
value of guidance and counselling in schools. Counsellors are essential in
assisting students in overcoming obstacles, from fostering academic success and
job development to promoting personal and social growth. Schools can enable
