Mastering the Art of Precis Writing: Techniques and guidelines

Definition:

Writing a precis is the process of identifying the key ideas in a document and summarising them. Summarising is deleting superfluous words or sentences from a lengthy article or speech and concisely conveying its true meaning without leaving out any crucial information.

Mastering the Art of Precis Writing: Techniques and guidelines

 PRECIS WRITING METHOD:

1: The length of a summary should be roughly one-third of the original material. Divide the passage's overall word count by three to get the word count, and then edit the text to be more exact.

2: Summarise the key ideas in the text, highlight the crucial details, and reformulate them in your own words.

3. When summarising, keep the same order of events as in the original text.

4: Since the precis encapsulates the text's central idea, describe it in your own terms.

5: Even though the passage may have several paragraphs, the precis should only be one paragraph long.

6. Editing or modifying the precis is not permitted.

7: When writing a summary, stay away from using metaphors, similes, and proverbs.

Now, let's take an example paragraph and write its precis, providing a suitable title.

      PASSAGE:

There are countless issues in the modern period for which there is no adequate or practical remedy. Two issues, though, have the attention of scientists everywhere. The first issue is related to space exploration and study into distant planets. The habitability of other planets and the existence of appropriate alternatives for human settlement are of interest to humans. The second issue focuses on personal struggles and how we might enhance our existence on this planet. In an effort to make life for people joyful, secure, and comfortable, it examines the actions that must be taken to abolish hunger, ignorance, poverty, and diseases from the planet. It is important to note that the planet's internal issues are much more difficult and important than its external issues. Building a station on the Moon or Jupiter would seem doable, but removing diseases, hunger, and illiteracy from the Earth would be extremely challenging.

TITLE:

Eliminating poverty, ignorance, and disease from the world is the most difficult task.

       PRECIS:

In the present period, people want to travel to other inhabited planets and look for potential new homes. They work to make the world a better place at the same time, hoping to eradicate diseases, poverty, and ignorance to create a happier and safer world. However, the internal issue of eliminating these problems turns out to be more difficult and important than the somewhat less difficult outward challenge of space exploration.
