Types of co-curricular activities:
A
president of the United States, “ says that in all the work that are done for
the country or can be done. The most
important work is their physical, mental, character, spiritual and moral
training. Those who have to take the reins of the country and decide the fate
of the country."
Co-curricular activities are chosen from the point of
view that they can fill the gap that remains in book education, so they include
educational, literary, recreational, social, physical and leisure activities.
Although there are different trends in activity. But one trend is more
prominent in each of them. For example, the social and civic element is more
prominent in the school assembly ,in physical, drama, school magazines and
debates have academic, literary and aesthetic trends in sports. Therefore,
children participate in multiple activities and thus their learning and
development are balanced. Although the list of activities is very long, a brief
overview of some of the activities that usually take place in our school is
necessary. One should try to create regularity in them and take full advantage
of them.
School Assembly:
In our school, usually as soon as the school starts, all the students get together in one place, recite a verse from the holy book, sing the national anthem and hoist the national flag. Sometimes some announcements are also done.
The functionality of this morning assembly needs
to be enhanced a bit. At present its importance is only that at one time all
the students and teachers of the school come together, and the principal addresses
them .
This also provides an opportunity to solve many problems.
But like American schools, if different school organizations programs are held,
students are given a chance to deliver speeches on different topics, or sometimes a guest
speaker is invited to express his
thoughts on an important topic, it would be transformed from a half-life
institution to become a very lively institution. But it requires a lot of
thought.
It also needs a
suitable place. At present, in our schools, students stand in the field for the
assembly and thus the program cannot last more than ten to fifteen minutes. But
in schools where there is room for students to sit together or at least enough
space where students can be divided into two groups and sit there at different
times, the school assembly can play a very important role. However, even in its
limited scope, the school assembly is a good place for students to meet, to be the center of awards and performance
announcements, learn etiquette and instill patriotism.
Student Council:
The student council has a central position in
co-curricular activities. It is also called Student Union and sometimes Student
Government. It is a party elected by the students, which is elected and
established according to a written constitution. Its position is a small scale government,
and its purpose is also to teach the students about how to participate in elections
and how to establish a government and to run a government.
All the co-curricular
activities of the school should be done under this council. And all the funds must
be spent under the instructions of this council.
There are many benefits of student council.
Immediate Benefits:
(a) The Student Council is an organization through which
the principal, teachers and students learn to perform the Citizen duties or responsibilities. They help in managing and creating a trend of good
reputation.
(b) Feelings of cooperation and sympathy are awakened in
students and teachers.

foundations, the teachers do not need much supervision and thereby develop a
sense of responsibility and self-confidence among the students.

all their attention is directed towards it.

Games:
In any educational system, along with book learning, if
there is one activity that holds the most importance, it is sports. A child's
temperament is more inclined towards play than reading. Life is worthy because of movement. A child has immense power
of command. Therefore, the success of any educational method designed for young
children depends on how much the element of play is included in it. As children
grow older, the importance of play does not decrease, but it also increases as
much as the energy in the body. The more the intensity and need for its use increases.
Especially when children enter puberty, a system of sports is essential to keep
their body and earth in the realm of purity and health.
In the same way, sports give relief to body fatigue.
Three benefits of sports are generally mentioned.
(1)
Sports are the best means of physical development and especially for school
going children who are entering puberty.
(2)
Through sports, children are exposed to activities that train their
inclinations, habits and dispositions and learn the proper use of leisure time.
(3)
Through sports, children become aware of collective activities, cooperation and
social needs and develop the importance of understanding the responsibilities
of the individual in the community. It fosters feelings of generosity and the
courage to accept defeat with a smile.
For the success of every institution, the existence of a
discipline is necessary. Sports should also be under a great discipline. It is
important for anyone to have a supervisor who is aware of the rules and
regulations of the game and has the ability to enforce them.
A code of ethics is also necessary for sports. All
children should participate in sports according to their mood and interest.
Timing is also important for the game. The provision of playing fields or if
the fields are less, the timings should be arranged in such a way that they can
be utilized as much as possible to keep the costs as low as possible, promote
more sporting spirit of competition in various events.
Scouting and Girls Guide:
Scouting is a global movement, the movement is highly
established and recognized. In this, the spirit of service is promoted above
caste, colour, race and other prejudices. It teaches health training, first
aid, and many useful social works. It is
the only extra-curricular activity which is not limited to school but outside
the school, the children are provided with practical work training and
opportunities to serve and help others and overcome difficulties. Its
principles are uniform and fixed throughout the world.
Scouting and girls guide movements are usually held in our schools. The
need is that it should not be allowed to remain a mere custom. Its supervisor
should be properly trained. The students involved in this should have a spirit
of service and they should work continuously to develop this spirit. Not only
Camp fire , but in floods, storms or
outbreaks of epidemics, earthquakes or other calamities, in the city supervisors
should bring their troops to help the citizens and
disaster victims. How fondly children do these things. They should get a chance
just once. With a little guidance and training, they are ready to face the
biggest disasters.
School Magazine:
The
school magazine is published in our schools usually once a year and sometimes
it is not even this. It contains reports on the performance of various
departments of the school and the activities of the students. The school magazine is the first institution
where children can see a picture of their literary interests.
A school magazine has numerous benefits;
1-A
school magazine is a mirror for those interested in school activities.
Students, teachers, parents, former students and others are aware of the
curricular and co-curricular activities through it.
(2) The magazine gives the students an
opportunity to express themselves, reflect their ideas and ambitions. The
magazine promotes school traditions.
(3)
Public opinion expressed by those who are bad at school activities, and that is
good.
(4)
The academic and literary skills of the students are enhanced and trained.
(5)
Knowledge of principles of journalism and practical experience.
(6) The history of the school is preserved
through the magazine.
(7)
School magazine is a means of communication and cooperation between teachers,
students and parents.
Discussion:
School magazine where writing is the medium of
expression. Debate provides an opportunity to express oneself in a speech
style. There is plenty of time for reflection in writing. There is time for
preparation in the debate too, but often you have to think about it immediately
and give arguments. The power of reasoning arises. One has to keep the mind
clear and ready for every occasion.
Discussions
have many benefits.
(1)
Self-confidence is created in students through discussions.
(2)
Standing in front of the crowd, one has to remove the fear and shyness which is
the problem of every student in the beginning.
(3)
Reading is also required to prepare the topic and strengthen your arguments by
discussing with others.
(4) It
increases interest in reading and acquiring information.
(5)
One has to keep the mind clear so that timely intervention can be answered and
every argument can be answered well.
(6)
Discussions develop the ability to express one's position and to have
confidence in one's point of view.
(7)
Debates provide adequate training for success in advocacy and political
leadership.
The list of co-curricular activities is long.
Co-curricular activities include inter-disciplinary societies and clubs, drama
performances, celebration of special days and weeks. Their benefits are also
recognized but the main question is how many of these activities take place in
our schools and whatever they do have some educational purpose behind them and
to what extent they are merely ritualistic. The current situation in front of us shows
that in general neither the teachers nor the students are interested in our
schools nor the society and the parents pay any attention to it. Only certain
types of schools have a few of these activities and even there the supervision
of the teachers is so high that the students become self-motivated and do not go beyond tradition. The responsibility
of this situation is not on a single person or organization. Our system, our
school buildings, our financial constraints and restrictions, a general state
of complacency and inattention have suspended co-curricular activities. They
need special attention to initiate and achieve educational goals from them.
