Socio-cultural Change and the Role of Education:
Man is never satisfied with one thing. It has a natural tendency to change. Man's attitude keeps changing with time and place, along with time there is a change in his position.
This change also
affects social institutions because all social institutions change when one
institution affects other institutions as well, thus changes in institutions
continue to take place over time.
For example, when a new country comes into existence, the condition of its society is not what it is in the past. There have been clear changes in all institutions of society. Its economy, constitution, educational activities, social norms, etc. are all mixed up in a significant way if there is one institutional difference.
In
view of some common basic needs of all human beings in the world, uniformity is
found in their cultural life such as hunger, thirst, sex and sleep etc.
In every society and culture, examples of human character
and behavior are defined, such as language, marriage and family system,
cultural differences based on age and sex, government system, religion,
knowledge, economic system, entertainment and art, etc.
They are the prominent qualities of a human being which he
makes full use of gaining a place in the
society and define it as culture. Cultural change refers to a change in some
aspect of cultural life i.e ideas, habits, customs, language and technology.
"Cultural change refers to changes in the core of a system that also affect society."
Socio-cultural variation is closely related, so sociologists
use socio-cultural variation in the same sense because it is difficult to
distinguish between them in practice, but theoretically, socio-cultural
variation can be distinguished.
For example, the people living in the different parts of the world can still be recognized from afar
due to their cultural traditions, but they all belong to the same society of human
beings.
Social changes in the world sometimes happen unconsciously
and sometimes they are brought about under regular planning.
These changes sometimes change its structure and sometimes
its functions. Unplanned change is adopted by individuals at their own will,
for example, changing fashion in imitation of Western culture. This change is
being adopted by being influenced by western culture. The changes brought about
by planning are introduced to the general public through the efforts of a few
people, for example, rural development programs, agricultural planning programs
and many other welfare associations.
The role of education:
Through education and training, the personality traits of
individuals flourish and develop. An individual without education is a walking
robot, outwardly human in form but inwardly lacking the character of humanity
which he needs in social life in groupings and in every relationship.
Education, makes aware of the difference between man and animal, the
manners of living in society, the basic routines and values of social life,
such as how to walk, eat, drink, dress, etc. It plays its role in the society in a special way by
getting training in traditions. Education not only creates the ability to
change and improve the old values and traditions of the society but also
preserves the civilization and culture of the society. These social values are
passed down from one generation to another.
And so it goes on. Apart from this, education also transmits
national traditions and values with modern changes in view of the needs of
the society and adopts its virtues while accepting the criticism of the past
and avoids adopting its unfavourable aspects. Rather, it tries to bring appropriate changes
in them by criticizing and commenting on them. Likewise education does the job of
critical evaluator.
This critical process
opens the way for the renewal of social thoughts and ideas, power in traditions
and customs. It seems that education also performs the work of renewal and
creation. Education about the human population has created a new mood in the
people, resulting in new attitudes and based on new customs. A clear example of
this is the tendency of having a small family.
Compared to uneducated people, educated people can do any
work in the first way, like building roads, building a new bridge, running a
car factory, or setting up a fire station, or a school, college and university,
running new cities and hospitals,
developing trade, industry or agriculture, all the people belonging to these
professions get infrastructure together.
The question arises that how to adapt the basic structure of
these people so that the can lead to an increase in the country's wealth.
Education is an investment. Economists consider education as
a necessary investment in the development of human resources. Or that human
resources can be developed only through education. Education should teach both
such essential skills.
Education must be based
on such high standards and modern techniques
that a developing country can be developed by establishing industries and factories in by installing automatic machines and achieving
maximum production through scientific methods.
The development of these sectors will require people who
know modern methods of production who are capable of working on complex and
automated machines for industrial development.
This will surely provide thousands of trained
people to carry out the construction work which we can do only with proper
investment. The developed countries should share their knowledge and skills to the people
of developing countries
through education
that these people can set up small
industries Even in their to houses and thus they can help their country to get progress
and the wealth of their respective countries.
